**Note: The following internship and consultant opportunities are unpaid; however, occasionally a small stipend might be included. All internships require a minimum commitment of two months except under special circumstances. Most internships are designed for those with a graduate level education or people with at least two years of paid experience in a similar position.

Grant Writing Intern

Purpose: To help raise funds for Puente's programs

Location: Oaxaca City, Oaxaca

Time Commitment: Minimum three months, 25 hours per week

Level of Spanish needed: Basic

Level of English needed: Fluent

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Excellent writing skills
  • Previous grant writing experience
  • Experience researching proposals and funding sources on the internet
  • Knowledge of MS Access, a plus!

Responsibilities: This intern will research potential funding sources as well as write and edit grant proposals. This could include using the Foundation Center's online database. The intern might also be in charge of maintaining accurate information in the grants database. Once per month, this intern has the opportunity to visit a rural community in order to observe Puente's work firsthand.

Local Business Outreach Intern

Purpose: To further Puente's relationships with local businesses

Location: Oaxaca City, Oaxaca

Time Commitment: Minimum two months, 25 hours per week

Level of Spanish needed: Advanced

Level of English needed: Intermediate

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Outgoing attitude
  • Background in business or sales
  • Ability to work independently and with others
  • Experience speaking in public
  • Capability to solicit donations

Responsibilities:

This intern will visit local businesses and speak with the owners about Puente. These businesses might be locally or foreign owned restaurants, food stores, clothing stores, etc. The intern will be given a basic script and a list of potential contacts from which to start. The purpose of the first visit will be to educate the business owner about Puente's mission and gauge the owner's interest while the second visit might be to ask for publicity in the business, a small monetary donation, or donated goods for an event. The intern might also conduct research on other potential partnerships for Puente. Once per month, this intern has the opportunity to visit a rural community in order to observe Puente's work firsthand.

Program Development Consultant

Purpose: To improve the success of Puente's programs and trainings

Location: Oaxaca City, Oaxaca, and some surrounding villages

Time Commitment: Minimum three months, 25 hours per week

Level of Spanish needed: Advanced

Level of English needed: Advanced

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong background in facilitating trainings
  • Experience with non-profit organizations
  • Experience providing workshops to marginalized people
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback
  • Knowledge of public health, a plus!

Responsibilities:

Initially, this consultant will spend time observing and learning about Puente's current programs and workshops. After some time, the consultant will meet with the staff to offer suggested changes and improvements to the current programs. Puente's directors will indicate which areas of programming they would like the consultant to develop. The consultant might also provide useful trainings to Puente's staff on ideas to improve their workshop facilitation skills. In order to observe Puente's work firsthand and provide better feedback, this consultant will travel to rural communities often.
